When the modems are working in a back to back situation, adjust the following settings using a terminal and
the &W command to save settings to modem memory. SW3 UP - Disable Command Responses SW8 UP -
Disable Command Mode SW16 - according to 2 or 4 wire operation S2=128 - disables on-line escape to
command mode S13=128 - disable remote configuration $SB=9600 - or whatever baud rate is required $BA -
so that we get a different serial baud rate to connection rate The owner's manual also lists many commands
relating to compression, parity and flow control which should be considered. Typically the block size may be
reduced and compression disabled if inter-byte delays are causing problems.

Back to back testing with Multi-Tech Modems -------------------------------------------
Purpose: To verify modems working over a 2 or 4 Wire Leased Line(2WLL or 4WLL).
Equipment needed: 2 Multi-Tech Modems optioned with leased line capabilities : 2 terminals ( for transmitting
and recieving data) : 2 straight thru DB25 25 pin or modem cables : for 2WLL testing a regular RJ-11 cable
will be used : for 4WLL testing a crossed RJ-11 cable will be used : small screwdriver for changing dip
switch's
Procedure:
1) First you must verify your modem is capable of lease line(LL) operation. Some Multi-Tech modems only
work in dialup operation, others do dialup and 2WLL, while others work with dialup, 2WLL, & 4WLL. The
ZDX, ZPX, & BC series only work in dialup operation, the LL option is not available on these models. All
other Multi Tech modems work in dialup & 2WLL. The BL & BLR series work in dialup, 2WLL & 4WLL
modes.
2) Next you will need the use of a terminal or PC and a straight through modem cable to set the serial baud
rates on both modems. The commands will be; AT$SBxxxx&W ( where xxxx= serial baud rate of terminal or
computer)
3) Next, you need to set the proper dip switch's for LL operation. Refer to dip switch settings below:

on the other modem for answer or originate mode(doesn't matter which side is which as long as one site has
dip 5 up and the other has dip 5 down). Make sure that both modems have switches 13 and 14 set identical.
ii) Ideal switch settings for Multi-Tech BA & BR series modems The settings are the same as the BL series
but switch 16 has no effect on the BA series. Also on some models, there is a seperate dial/leased toggle
switch located by the other bank of dip switchs, this needs to be toggled into the leased position for this test.

D U-if hardware flow control used
X=up on one modem and down on the other modem for answer or originate mode(doesn't matter which side
is which as long as one site has dip 5 up and the other has dip 5 down). Make sure that the baud rate
switches are set identical between them ( located on the front ).
